AdGuard Home blocking and DNS getting out of control.

Over the course of the last two weeks I have had more problems with my AdGuard Home blocking normal things from working than I have had over the last few years I have been using it.

The first indication was errors when backing up to Backblaze B2 via rclone. At first I thought it was an rclone error so I went through the data with the rclone folks. Nope. Turns out it was a DNS error and disabling my AdGuard Home solves the problems. Second was complete websites being blocked. I learned this when I went to look up a lasagna recipe and could not load the website. What website you ask?

Not ads on the website, not parts of it used for tracking, the the entire website. Next was when I went to download the owners manual for my vehicle... Nope, the entire website was blocked. Which website was that?

Any others? Yep... completely blocked.

I went through the queries and attempted to unblock these websites, then the first page opened but as soon as I clicked around it was blocked again. Everything in the domain was blocked. Why? So the next thing I did was check what was blocking it. 1Hosts (Lite) and (Xtra) I disabled those and the websites work again but they're also not blocking anything else either.

I will check to see if my backups work after I submit this because if it doesn't, my computer will crash...

This is ridiculous. Does anyone vet these blocking lists?

Ok, turning those block lists off did NOT solve the error trying to work with Backblaze B2. I did not think it would as it is a DNS error, but what the heck may as well check, right?

edit: There was an entry in the query list this time however... Backblaze is not malware...

edit the edit: And of course deleting those lists has enabled Backblaze to work fine. So I have to ask again, does anyone vet these block lists?

The bottom line is the issue you had was a result of poorly managed lists, regardless of the source. Fortunately, very good open source lists exist

Maybe you enjoy managing your lists but normal people do not. Normal people want to go about their lives without troubleshooting their Adguard Home constantly. Normal people would expect that the lists provided by AdGuard Home would be useful for purpose and stable. Normal people would expect a heads up when blocklists are removed from the official lists, either for cause or just because they're no longer maintained. If Adguard Home is not going to at a minimum do this, they should provide no lists of blocklists other then their own.

Luckily for me, I was able to solve this problem easily and I have a clear ability and interest. Normal people do not.

Lastly, labeling Backblaze as malware is a pretty egregious thing to do. The Firebog blocklist was removed from the provided lists for a reason, AdGuard Home needs to communicate that to it's users. Imagine if any other software dev made changes to their software and didn't tell anyone, instead left it up to their users to discover it on their own when things went wrong...

The bottom line is, AdGuard needs to communicate better.

Yet I haven’t touched my configured lists in over a year. Btw, the Hagezi lists are built-in to AGH(look ate your previous screenshots). For most open source projects you gotta pay attention to what’s going on instead of passively expecting everything to always work automatically. Maybe open source isn’t for you.

As I stated earlier, I have never once, ever ever, pinky swear, gone outside of the list of blocklists provided in AGH.

Perhaps my mistake was assuming AdGuard Home devs wanted to be taken seriously...
