SmallW2K

This project is provided for educational and experimental purposes only. Windows 2000 and all Microsoft components remain the property of Microsoft.

SmallW2K is an extremely debloated Windows 2000 Professional SP0–based distro made as a proof of concept of how much "bloat" Windows 2000 contains.

Tested mainly on Oracle VM VirtualBox 6.1, other VirtualBox versions or VM software have not been tested and may break

Features

  • Fully automated setup
  • Boots with as little as 9 MB RAM
  • Explorer, Notepad, Task Manager included
  • No Start Menu
  • No MMC
  • Exactly one Control Panel applet
  • No Calculator
  • No themes
  • No icons
  • Minimal fonts
  • Still makes and edits files

Removed / Missing on Purpose

  • Start Menu
  • Control Panel
  • MMC (mmc.exe)
  • Registry tools
  • Calculator
  • Paint
  • Most fonts
  • Most drivers
  • Most services
  • Almost all bitmaps
  • Sanity

Errors during setup are normal and can be ignored.
If it boots, it’s working as intended.

System Requirements

✅ Recommended

  • Storage: 256 MB HDD
  • RAM: 16 MB (somehow works fine)
  • CPU: 200 MHz (estimate)

⚠️ Minimum (yes, really)

  • Storage: 110 MB HDD
  • RAM: 9 MB
  • CPU: 100 MHz (estimate)

Booting at minimum specs is painfully slow but possible.

ISO Size checkpoints

  • 50 MB
  • 45 MB
  • 40 MB
  • 35 MB
  • 30 MB
  • 25 MB
  • 20 MB
  • 15 MB
  • 10 MB

Purpose

SmallW2K exists to:

  • Explore the real lower limits of Windows 2000
  • Prove NT 5.0 can boot on absurd hardware
  • Serve as a technical curiosity, not a daily driver
