Refactor compatibility code #63
Description
At the moment, we only have two methods under a two-way conditional, so we don't have a strong need for a very mature solution to multiple version compatibility. As more versions become supported, though, we will likely need to add elsifs to that conditional (and we might even end up re-defining more methods). We should consider a pattern like @grdw mentions in this PR: #61 (comment)
