Metrics without a dimension?

Is it possible to retrieve metrics without supplying a dimension? Specifically, I'm trying to get the total number of visitors for an amount of time. Google's documentation seems to say you have to provide a dimension and a metric, but I don't see what dimension/metric combination would supply the data I'm needing.

I have the same issue. I.e can't do a simple

"data = account.get_data(start_date, end_date, metrics=['visits'])"

No data is return unless you specify a dimension. But how do you get the aggregated then?
