Hi everyone, I want to investigate whether prestige dining is losing its meaning, specifically, whether the Michelin Guide has become so expansive that the star rating no longer functions as a reliable signal of exceptional quality.

The core question is: has Michelin inflated its own standard? As the guide has expanded into more cities and countries over the past two decades, the number of starred restaurants has grown significantly. I want to examine whether that growth has outpaced the restaurant industry broadly, and whether consumer perception of what a Michelin star means has shifted as a result. To do this meaningfully, I want to compare across the UK, France, the broader EU, the US, and Canada, covering both Michelin's home market and the major western markets where the guide carries the most cultural weight.

From there, the project opens into several directions. Are Google Maps and TripAdvisor ratings actually aligned with Michelin designations, or is there a consistent and meaningful gap between critical prestige and public reception? Does that gap look different in France, where Michelin originates and carries the deepest institutional history, versus newer markets like the US and Canada where the guide's authority is more contested? What does that tell us about who Michelin is reviewing for across different cultural contexts?

On the cuisine side, is the guide biased toward certain food traditions, French, Japanese, high-concept tasting menus, and does that composition vary by country, or does Michelin apply a relatively uniform standard regardless of local food culture? Is the guide evolving to reflect the diversity of what people are actually eating, or is it staying rigid while the dining public moves on?

Methods would likely include trend analysis on the growth of starred restaurants over time across all five markets, sentiment and rating comparison across Michelin, Google Maps, and TripAdvisor, cuisine classification analysis using the guide's own listing data, and regression modeling to test whether a Michelin star still predicts restaurant longevity and consumer approval. Data sources would include the Michelin Guide's publicly available listings, Google Places API, TripAdvisor, INSEE for French industry data, the National Restaurant Association for the US, UK Hospitality, Statistics Canada, and Eurostat for broader EU figures.
