New version release request

When is the next release going to happen? Stuff has been merged but a new version hasn't been released yet.

A backward-incompatible change has been introduced, as support for PHP 7 has been dropped, so the next release will be version 1.0.

Before releasing 1.0, I’d also like to include another breaking change (#582). This should help avoid putting users through two closely spaced releases with backward-incompatible changes.

The release will go out once these changes are complete. In the meantime, if you’d like to start using the current main branch, it should already be fairly stable—any additional beta testing and feedback would be very much appreciated.
