I do like the bubble concept that is shown last, but it would definitely need some way of applying the blur to the workspace bubbles. The background (0th) workspace should also be split out as well, and would need a better way of differentiating it from the "regular" workspaces. |

I did not found a way to have two blur zones, so the space between the two docks is currently blurred too.
I also tried without a container for the workspace dock:
