Hi Emily, here are some reviews on your idea 1:
Firstly, I think this is an interesting topic, and I've briefly looked at the websites that you've provided. For me, one way to extract the data is to web-scrape the posts and articles. It may take a lot of times, but it will give you a set of unique data, which makes your project unique. It seems to me, and I hope I'm wrong that the there's not a vast amount of variables that can help build the regression models, so if that's the case, it is something you should take into consideration. One thing you can also take into consideration is to web-scrape Twitter (make sure you check the terms and conditions of using Twitter's data, or any website). And hopefully in your project, you could define "political climate" best in a numerical way, using relevant variables, bc this concept sounds like opinion-based to me. To extract data that supports this concept, you need valid proof to back up your argument.

Hope you have a great project!

Emily, this is my feedback on your idea 2:

In terms of the research question, you're assuming that crafting increases in popularity among young generations, and this should be backed by numbers and statistics, instead of pure assumptions. Maybe you'd like to make this kind of statement at the end of your analysis. I didn't have access to your data so I could not have further comments. If you have sufficient data, considering EDA and data visualization to make it accessible for the peers and professor. Also, I think there's a lot of rooms for you to improve on the stakeholder and ethical implications. Hope you do well!

Nice slides theme!
Nice discussion of data sources.
Great heat map. It would be nice to add a time scale where the users shift and we see the map updating.
It seems that incidents increased after the 2023 Hamas attack. I imagine this might be related to protests in the U.S.? Would you be able to find out if incidents occurred more on campuses? You can use the lat/lon location for this.
I wonder if you can find news articles related to this and use that in the intro/background discussion on what has been happening in our society and provide some hypotheses following that
Make sure to control for population: normalize incidents by population
The census data you can get can be at census tract level which is very good
Nice discussion of implications, very concrete. Great ethics discussion too as your work is improving the wellbeing of the society concretely.

Progress presentation comments:

  • Stacked bar chart is too cluttered. Consider adding a filter that allows displaying separately for each incident which would make it easier to be see. It should also be a line chart since conventionally with year on the x axis, line charts are typically chosen.
  • I like the side by side plots.
  • Did the war lead to spike in other hate crimes than the two?
  • I like the maps a lot following general trends.
  • Wow, DC seems to have a very high proportion. Why is that?
  • Is there correlation between vote margins and hate crimes? Eg, are hate crimes politically driven?
  • Try scraping X for hate speech to show examples but also some statistics?
