Idea 1:

I think this is very good idea to look into. I think it would be interesting to see if TikTok has any effect on opening weekends for movies. I like how detailed your research question is and how detailed your exploratory analysis is. Try to see if you can expand your dataset from collecting 50 movies to more. The more data you have, the better your models and exploratory analysis is. If you decide to continue with this project beyond just the mini project, I would suggest to do a predictive model and see what your results are. This will strengthen your project and confirm if TikTok actually does or does not have an impact on open weekends for movies. I look forward to your findings.

I think your idea 2 is very strong and very relevant to where we are today. I am interested to see these results. Try to remain as specific as possible when completing your project. But other than that, I look forward to seeing your findings if you decide this is the project you want to do.

Very timely topic. Nice to start with a question.
Nice motivation, intro graph.
Nice heat map too!
It makes sense to share nationalities which you did. It helps if you share your data source, or challenges related to that before presenting any data.
Classification makes sense.
Differences in differences would be incorrect here, because ice's policy is non-random. I think yours is more fitting for instrumental variables where the exogenous Z variable is immigration heavy-weak industries. In other words, if you see a correlation between unemployment in immigration heavy industries, you may be able to explain this could be due to ice arrests. But it is still somewhat difficult to do so because those sectors could be experiencing other policies than ice policy. Eg, tariffs etc.
Nice implications and ethics discussion!
Maybe for future direction, you can focus more on presenting the arrests data and industries, more information on companies, sectors etc. Maps are the way to go.

Progres presentation comments:

  • You should boast about the data size instead of positioning it as a challenge. It is good that there is a lot of data.
  • Great viz showing stem and non stem opt shares. Note that y axis should be "share".
  • Bachelor to Masters move probably shows that it has been more difficult for international students to be hired directly from undergrad over the last 1-2 decades?
  • You need to work more on the ethics implications. Any background on the US labor laws? What should the government do? Policy recommendations?
