Unicode support

UTF-8 is now supported for metric and label names!

  • this is a backwards compatible change
    • only Prometheus servers that can handle UTF-8 will actually see it
    • otherwise you'll still get the same _ replacement characters as before
  • in the push gateway, you have to enable UTF-8 support explicitly
  • unit names still do not support UTF-8
  • refer to the documentation for details

This update is now breaking the CollectorIntegrationTest.endToEnd() and the PrometheusIntegrationTest.endToEnd(), and I can't tell why.

I was able to reproduce it locally:

I don't grok why we expect both service.name and service_name (for example) but this version of prometheus client definitely changes how the replacement rules happen...but I'm noticing that the actual contains ZERO keys with underscores in it, so I suspect what previously had underscores now has dots and is overwriting the same keys...but I am not sure what to do about it, short of changing the expected. 😭
